The mood was understandably somber and the winner’s circle celebration subdued as champions were crowned at the 39th annual Lucas Oil SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, a day after the qualifying accident that claimed the life of popular Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta. Following a day of tears and tributes, Tony Schumacher, Tim Wilkerson, Greg Anderson, and Chip Ellis emerged as the professional champions in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle respectively.

A torrential downpour and a tornado warning pushed backed the final round of Top Fuel qualifying by more than three hours, but racers, fans, and staff persevered to complete Saturday's activities at the 11th annual Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Chicago. Those who waited were awarded with milestone No. 1 finishes by Melanie Troxel in Funny Car and Tony Schumacher in Top Fuel.

Troxel became the first woman to qualify No. 1 in Funny Car history during an incredible final qualifying session, and Schumacher took the pole position for the 50th time in his career. Prior to the rain, qualifying was completed in the gasoline-powered Professional classes with Jeg Coughlin taking the top seed in Pro Stock and Chris Rivas earning his first No. 1 spot in Pro Stock Motorcycle...

NHRA drivers - including John Force - will begin to test the limits of a new 700-foot concrete launch pad during the National Time Trials today through Sunday at Firebird International Raceway.

Force, a 14-time Funny Car champion, plans to be back in his Castrol Ford Mustang for the first time since suffering multiple foot, knee, hand and wrist injuries in a September accident. Force first must show NHRA officials that he can get out of his car quickly in the event of another incident.
